How to Improve Wi-Fi Signal at Home: A Practical Troubleshooting Guide

Weak home Wi-Fi is often caused by router placement, interference or the limits of a single router. Work through these practical checks to improve coverage and reliability.

Slow downloads and video calls that freeze are not always an internet-package problem. In many homes, the connection reaches the router perfectly well but struggles to travel through walls, floors and interference to the rooms where it is needed. Improving Wi-Fi signal starts with separating a coverage issue from a broadband issue, then addressing the simplest likely causes first.

First, work out whether Wi-Fi is actually the problem

Before changing settings or buying extra equipment, compare how your connection behaves close to the router with how it behaves in the troublesome area. If it is reliable nearby but poor in a bedroom, loft or garden office, Wi-Fi coverage is the likely issue. If it is slow or unstable everywhere, including beside the router, the cause may instead be the broadband line, the router itself, or a service issue.

A wired test can make the distinction clearer. Connect a computer to the router with an Ethernet cable, if practical, and check whether the problem remains. A stable wired connection alongside unreliable wireless devices points towards Wi-Fi. If both are poor, contact your internet provider after checking for reported outages and restarting the equipment.

  • Poor in one or two rooms: usually coverage, distance or interference.
  • Poor at busy times on every device: could be broadband capacity or local network congestion.
  • Poor on one device only: check that device’s software, Wi-Fi settings and location before changing the whole network.

Put the router in the best possible position

Router placement has an outsized effect on signal strength. Wi-Fi travels outward from the router, so a central, open position usually serves a home better than a cupboard, corner or low shelf. If the router must connect to a fixed wall socket, use a longer suitable cable only where your provider’s setup allows it, or consider moving the network equipment in a way that does not compromise the incoming connection.

Raise the router onto a shelf or table and keep it clear of dense obstructions. Brick walls, concrete, metal, mirrors, water-filled objects and underfloor heating can all weaken or redirect a wireless signal. A router placed inside a TV unit or behind a television is also more likely to have its signal blocked.

  • Avoid placing the router on the floor or inside a cabinet.
  • Keep some distance from cordless-phone bases, baby monitors, microwave ovens and other wireless electronics.
  • Position external antennas according to the router maker’s guidance. Where adjustable antennas are fitted, changing their orientation can help devices located on different floors.

Choose the right Wi-Fi band for the room

Most current routers offer 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, while some newer equipment also supports 6 GHz. These bands involve a trade-off rather than one being universally better. The 2.4 GHz band generally reaches further and passes through obstacles more effectively, but it can be crowded. The 5 GHz band can offer more capacity and is often preferable nearer the router, though its range through walls is typically shorter. The 6 GHz band is intended for compatible newer devices and generally benefits most from a clear, shorter path to the router.

Many routers automatically steer devices between bands under one network name. That is convenient and often works well. If a device repeatedly clings to a weak band, however, it may be worth checking the router settings or using separate network names if the router supports them. Avoid changing advanced settings without noting the original configuration first.

  • Use 2.4 GHz for devices far from the router or separated by several walls.
  • Use 5 GHz for higher-demand devices in rooms with stronger coverage.
  • Use 6 GHz only with compatible devices and where its shorter-range characteristics suit the layout.

Reduce congestion and interference

Wi-Fi shares radio spectrum with nearby networks and household electronics. In a block of flats or a dense neighbourhood, several routers may compete for the same channels. Modern routers can often select a channel automatically, and leaving this enabled is a sensible starting point. If performance remains inconsistent, the router’s app or admin page may show channel options or an optimisation tool.

Do not assume that changing a channel will solve every weak-signal problem. It cannot overcome thick walls or an overly distant room. It is most useful when the signal appears adequate but devices suffer from intermittent delays, disconnections or variable speeds, particularly at predictable times.

  • Restart the router before making major configuration changes, especially if it has been running for a long period.
  • Install router firmware updates supplied by the manufacturer or provider, as they can address stability and security issues.
  • Use a strong, unique Wi-Fi password so uninvited users cannot consume your connection.

Give high-priority devices a more reliable connection

For a fixed device such as a desktop computer, games console, smart TV or work dock, Ethernet is often the most dependable option. A cable avoids wireless interference and leaves more Wi-Fi capacity for phones, tablets and portable devices. It is particularly useful for equipment used for video meetings, online gaming or large file transfers.

Where a direct cable is impractical, consider the route before choosing an extension method. A Wi-Fi mesh system uses multiple coordinated units to extend coverage, and is often well suited to larger homes or layouts with several dead spots. A wired access point can be an excellent option where Ethernet cabling is possible. Wi-Fi extenders can help in a limited area, but need to be placed where they still receive a strong signal from the main router. Putting one in a dead zone simply repeats a weak connection.

  • Use Ethernet for stationary, important devices where possible.
  • Choose mesh for broad, whole-home coverage rather than one isolated weak room.
  • Place an extender roughly between the router and the poor-coverage area, not at the furthest edge of coverage.
  • If using powerline adapters, remember that results can depend on the home’s electrical wiring and circuit layout.

Check for device and network settings that create avoidable problems

Older phones, laptops and smart-home devices may not support the same Wi-Fi features as newer hardware. They can also slow down their own connection through power-saving modes, outdated network drivers or poor software compatibility. Update the operating system and Wi-Fi drivers where applicable, then forget and reconnect to the network if a single device is behaving oddly.

A guest network can be useful for visitors and some smart devices, but it should not be confused with a cure for weak signal. Likewise, parental controls and traffic-prioritisation features can be useful when configured carefully, but they will not increase the physical range of the router. Focus first on coverage and interference, then adjust these options only for a clear reason.

  • Check whether the affected device performs normally on another trusted Wi-Fi network.
  • Remove old saved networks if a device connects to the wrong one automatically.
  • Keep router administration credentials separate from the Wi-Fi password and change default admin details where supported.

Know when to speak to your internet provider

Contact your provider when the connection is unreliable even through Ethernet, when the router’s connection light indicates a line fault, or when repeated restarts do not restore a stable service. Explain what you tested, including whether the issue occurs on wired devices, across the whole home or only in certain rooms. This helps distinguish a line problem from an indoor Wi-Fi issue.

If the provider supplied an older router, ask whether it can be replaced or whether its settings can be checked remotely. A new router may help when the existing one is faulty or lacks support for the devices and coverage needs in the home, but it cannot by itself defeat every physical barrier.

  • Record when dropouts happen and which devices are affected.
  • Check the provider’s service-status page before spending time on home troubleshooting.
  • Do not reset a provider router to factory settings unless you know how to restore any required broadband credentials.

Improve Wi-Fi methodically

Start with router placement, then test the relevant Wi-Fi band and rule out interference. Add coverage equipment only after identifying where the signal fails and how the home is laid out. A few targeted changes are usually more effective than changing every router setting at once, and a wired connection remains the simplest answer for fixed devices that need maximum reliability.
